This guide will walk you through the simple steps of adding alt text to your images within the Orlo composer to improve the accessibility of your social media content
Things to consider ✅
- ALT text functionality is currently supported only on Facebook, X, and LinkedIn. We plan to integrate this feature on additional platforms once they provide support through their APIs.
- If you want to make ALT text mandatory on your account, you can turn on the 'ALT Text Required' permission in the 'Publish Settings' area.
Benefits 🙌
- ALT is essential for the accessibility of your content for visually impaired people who need to use screen readers
- Social networks also use ALT text to increase the discoverability of your social media content
How to add ALT Text to your Social Media Content:
1) Navigate to the 'Compose Post ✒️' icon in the top right-hand corner to load the composer.
2) Once you have uploaded your image, click on the three dots on the image and select 'ALT Text' ➡️ Add your image description ➡️ Click 'Save ALT Text'
Once published, those who have screen-reading software will be able to hear the Alt Text added read aloud.
Turning on the ALT Text Required Permission:
3) Navigate to the menu in the top right-hand corner ➡️ Click 'Settings' ➡️ Click 'Publish Settings'
4) Toggle on the 'ALT Text Required' permission. When this option is enabled, it requires all posts to have ALT text added to any media that you add to your social media posts. If ALT text isn't added, an error will appear when clicking the publish post option in the composer
