Ready to create engaging social media posts with Orlo? This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the composer, showing you how to create social media content.
Things to consider ✅
- To create content, users will need the 'Post' permission enabled for the social media accounts they need access to.
Benefits of using the composer 🙌
- Streamlined content creation - one centralised place to create your social media content, great if you have multiple accounts to manage
- Time-Saving - features such as split posting and the drafts functionality allow you to create multiple pieces of content at once, rather than going into each native platform, saving time and increasing efficiency
- Brand consistency - Allows for better oversight of your content, making sure the tone of voice is consistent across your social channels

6. Tagging content to campaigns and post tags
9. Additional options for content
Creating a post:
1) Navigate to the 'Compose Post ✒️' icon in the top right-hand corner to load the composer.
You can customise the view of the composer in the following ways:
- Full view
- Half View
- Switch sides to view the composer on both halves of your screen
- Minimise - Great if you want to keep content you are working on whilst in other areas of Orlo
Select the accounts that you want to post to by clicking on the 'Select Accounts' button. You can click the 'All Accounts' button to choose all your social media accounts.
(Orlo integrates with X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Nextdoor, YouTube, and TikTok).
Add the text copy of your social media post in the text area. You can add links, tag social media @ handles, and add emojis 😀.
Recommendation 💡
- When tagging a profile for Facebook using the profile search function, we advise using the name given in the URL on Facebook, as this will increase the searchability of the account
- When tagging a profile for LinkedIn, you can tag any business profile, but for personal accounts, they need to be following you or have interacted with your content within the last three months to be tagged
- To search for a profile, we recommend being in split post mode
How to preview links:
2) Hover over the link and click on 'Edit Link'. This will take you to the link previewer, where you can toggle on link tracking and UTM tracking and add a custom prefix to your Orlo link shorter.
If you disable Link Tracking, Orlo will be unable to monitor link clicks in your analytics reports.
Splitting out a post:
3) If you want to create a different version of a post you can use the 'Split Post' button to customise the post per channel.
Note: When splitting the post out, you get the character limits per network and additional capabilities per network, such as posting carousels and reels on Instagram, reply controls for certain networks, and adding location tags for Facebook and Instagram.
Adding media to your post:
4) You can then add any media to your post. This may be images, videos, or GIFs. To add media, click on the 📎 icon or the ➕ button and select 'Upload Image/ gif' or 'Upload Video'. You can select from your own device, links, Dropbox or Google Drive, and Orlo's Content Library to upload media.
Click on one of the media upload options ➡️ Select the media (you can add multiple at one time) ➡️ Click 'View/Edit Selected' ➡️ Click 'Upload'
Recommendation 💡
Take a look at our media upload limits, which show the file types that each network accepts through the API
Once your media is uploaded, you have the option to add ALT text to images and subtitles to videos.
Adding ALT Text:
- Click on the three dots on the image and select 'ALT Text' ➡️ Add your image description ➡️ Click 'Save ALT Text'
❌ ALT text is not supported on Instagram, Nextdoor, YouTube and TikTok
Media can also be rearranged after you have uploaded media in the composer. To do this, simply drop and drag the media that you want to move.
Adding subtitles to videos:
5) Click on the three dots on the image and select 'Add Captions' ➡️ Click 'Upload SRT File' ➡️ Click 'Choose Your Language' ➡️ Click 'Add Captions'.
- If you’re adding subtitles to videos for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram, you need to upload an SRT file.
- If you’re adding subtitles to videos for YouTube, you need to upload an XML file.
Tagging content to campaigns and post tags:
6) Once you have created your post, you can tag your content to a campaign to categorise content and analyse the performance of campaigns. See our full guide on understanding Campaigns and Post Tags.
To add a campaign or post tag, click the 'Orlo Tags and Campaigns' dropdown. To add post tags, click the 'Add Post Tags' drop-down option, and to add a Parent or Child Campaign, click the 'Campaign' drop-down option.
Things to consider ✅
- Multiple post tags can be applied to content
- Only ONE campaign can be attached to content. This can be a parent (main) or a child (sub) campaign
Preview your content:
7) Once you have finished editing your content, you can view what your post will look like on the native platforms. To do this, click on the 'Preview Post' button in the top right-hand corner.
Scheduling content:
8) You have the option to schedule your content for a specific date and time by utilising the scheduling feature. You can either manually choose your preferred time and date or use the 'Smart Schedule' feature, which looks at the best time to post based on the last 30 days' engagement on your account.
To schedule content, click on the 'No Scheduled Posts' dropdown ➡️ select the calendar option ➡️ select the date ➡️ click 'Add to Schedule' ➡️ click in the time box to select your time (you can use the AM and PM toggle to change the time of day). To remove any schedules, click on the 🗑️ 'Delete Schedules' button.
You can schedule the same post in Orlo up to twelve times in total (this has to be seven days apart for your X accounts). To schedule again, click on 'Add More Schedules' and repeat the steps above.
Additional Options for Content:
Take a look at our full help guides for the areas below for further instructions!
Post Expiry
- You can set your content to automatically expire after a specified period, ensuring it is deleted from the social network. This feature is useful for time-sensitive content, such as events, weather posts or delay posts.
- To add a post-expiry date to your content, toggle on the 'Post Expiry' option ➡️ Click on the calendar option ➡️ select a date ➡️ Click in the time box to select your time (you can use the AM and PM toggle to change the time of day).
Note: The Post Expiry feature is not available through Instagram's API, which means you'll need to manually delete any content directly on the platform.
Share First Comment
- You have the option to schedule the first comment for your social media post alongside the main post. This feature is particularly useful for including links in the comments to enhance engagement with the algorithm or to provide additional information when character limits restrict the main text.
- To add a first comment, toggle on the 'Share First Comment' option ➡️ Add your text for the comment. You can also use the split post feature if you don't need to schedule a comment for all accounts.
Targeting
Targeting options are available for organic content for LinkedIn, Facebook and Nextdoor to target certain groups of your followers.
The following options are available:
Facebook - Countries, Cities, Age, Relationship Status and Gender
LinkedIn - Geo Locations, Company Size, Job Function, Industry and Seniority Level
Nextdoor - Areas pull through from the areas that have been set up natively in Nextdoor
To target followers within these channels, toggle on the targeting icon and fill in your options!
Now you are done with editing your post, all that is left to do is to click on the or
option in the bottom right-hand corner!
