Using Boolean Search in the Query Builder

This document explains how to use Boolean search logic within Orlo's query builder in Insights to create listening streams for keywords.

What is Boolean Search?

Boolean search is a system of logic used to combine keywords in a search query. It allows you to broaden or narrow your search results by specifying the relationships between your search terms. Orlo's query builder uses Boolean logic using the following ways:

  • AND: This groups together searches requiring all specified keywords to be present in the content before being shown in the search stream.
  • OR:  This picks up either of the keywords in your stream, meaning a single keyword from the stream will be shown in the search stream
  • EXCLUDE:  This filters out keywords in your search stream by excluding content containing a specific keyword.

You can build out your search queries to pick up mentions relating to your chosen topics or organisation.

Example Search Streams:

This stream is looking at mentions of Bin Collection "AND" Birmingham and uses two single condition options using the global level logic.

This stream is looking at mentions of School Funding "AND" UK Government "OR" Department for Education using the single condition and group condition option.

This stream is looking at mentions of UK Policing "AND" excluding the keyword Europe.

Tips for the Query Builder 💡

  • Use quotation marks (" ") for exact phrases: This ensures that the words are picked up in the stream in the specified order.
  • Try different keyword combinations: Consider beginning with a broad search to capture a wide range of results, then utilise the reports feature in Insights to refine and narrow down your results.
  • Review your stream results regularly: Fine-tune your queries based on the quality and relevance of the data you're receiving.
